How to take a fun Christmas photo

We all know the classic cheesy annual Christmas photos, and you could go for the Christmas tree shot with your family again this year, but wouldn’t it be much more fun to do something a little different? Photographer Jeroen Berends has five tips for creating an original Christmas photo, so you can stand out from the crowd!

Step 1. Plan ahead

Some people are so organised that they’ll be taking next year’s photo this year, but since you’re reading this, you’re probably not thinking that far ahead just yet. If you’d like to use your Christmas photo as a Christmas card this year or would like to add it to a personalised gift or wrapping paper, you’ll need to take your photo in advance. Create a clear plan, don’t wait until the week before Christmas rolls around as you’ll definitely be too late by then. Unless you’re taking next year’s photo, of course!

Step 2. Choose your location

You can decorate your Christmas tree to pose in front of, but there are plenty of other options to choose from. How about a cosy Christmas market setting as the backdrop for your photo? The annual Christmas markets start as early as November in Germany, which would leave you with plenty of time to create your Christmas cards. Most other countries have Christmas markets from the beginning of December, or have other beautifully decorated spots with fairy lights for a festive Christmas look. If you’d like to do something completely different, think of your family’s favourite places, such as the beach or forest. Perhaps you love cooking together, and could set up a photoshoot in the kitchen. There are so many options, and the best part is that they’re all so much more unique and personal than the standard Christmas tree photo!

Step 3. Select your props

Ok, location sorted, along with all of the people included in the photo. What else do you need? Will you be including your cat, puppy or hamster to add a cute, cuddly touch? You could even dress them up in a Christmas outfit for an extra festive vibe. They may not be thrilled, but they can handle it if it’s only once a year and remember; even a grumpy pet could add a fun touch to your photo. Babies and small children in Christmas outfits are always a hit, and don’t be scared to think out of the box here, the photo should say something about how you’ll be spending Christmas together. Perhaps you’re celebrating somewhere warm this year and could include goggles and a snorkle - the possibilities are endless.

Step 4. Use a tripod

Use a tripod! They’re not just handy for setting up your camera anywhere, but are also helpful when taking photos in areas with low light levels. This requires a slower shutter speed, which means the camera needs to be as still as possible. Avoid using flash, as this will take away any warmth in colour and lighting. Do ensure your light is coming from the front rather than from behind. For example, if your Christmas tree is in front of a window, either select a different spot or wait for it to get dark outside.

Step 5. Have fun with it

Real life isn’t Instagram, so your Christmas photo doesn’t need to be picture-perfect. It can add a touch of humour if something goes wrong, someone looks a little grumpy or the baby has a little incident. All of these things just make your photo more personal and funnier. Just make sure to take your time, try different things and have fun with it. Everyone will love this year’s Christmas photo, that’s for sure!
